Always a good experience. We Received book in great condition and in record time.Good reading that you don't want to put down.Shared book with all of my family that i got hooked on this book series. We Love getting things from amazon.
I can't wait to see what's in store for Harry Dresden next, but if Jim Butcher would slow the pace down a fraction, I wouldn't complain. There was so much going on in this book, all good, all exciting, all interesting, but almost like entertainment overload. Vampire, ghosts, demons - Harry's got problems. Grave Peril was an action packed mystery that kept me on my toes and slightly confused throughout.
It's annoying. And Butcher keeps throwing in so many plot twists that he has to wrap them all up in the last chapter. But, still, I've enjoyed the books so far and can't wait to read book 4. I hope to finish this series off--the books I've read so far were good reads--but I wish Butcher would quit trying to throw so much at us. I mean, Harry can only be on his last ounce of energy so many times.
It's too bad the religious pinnings ruined it. About halfway into this book, having read the first two, I began to grow concerned regarding the heavy Christian themes. The further I read, the worse it got, until I finally I had to put the book down. After a bit of research into the following books, I found that this wasn't a theme that was likely to change.Until I got sick of it, this was the best book in the series.
My only complaint was with the ending. It could have ended sooner, and would have been stronger for it. I was ready to be thoroughly pleased with the book as a whole when it appeared things were winding down to a conclusion. It certainly will keep the fans of the series coming back. There are some very creepy scenes, along with the usual moments of wit and humor. Dresden has faced a sorcerer and werewolves in the last 2 books. This one begins with a series of ghostly encounters, some with fatal results. A new character is introduced, and his virtue and confidence in the order of things is an effective complement to Dresden.
This book was noticeably superior to the other 2 for me, in terms of the balance between characters, action, humor and story. That said, this was a book with few flaws. It reminded me of an annoying infomercial, where the hook seems to be ". Count me among them. The attempt to keep the suspense and drama going was a bit forced, and on the whole, unnecessary. While their philosophies differ, their strength together is nicely developed. but wait, there's more.". Dresden suspects there is more than coincidence in the ghostly wanderings from the spirit realm to the human one, and theorizes that someone or something is driving them.
Instead, there seemed to be an effort to draw it out. The traps laid for Dresden are very well told and revealed with just the right notes, for maximum effect. Murphy, thankfully, is mostly absent from this story. There are a few more deep moments than the previous books, but certainly not enough to outweigh the fun and action you expect.
